We’re having an international student (who is attending a nearby university) as our only guest for Thanksgiving dinner. We’d like to do something (even if it’s small) to make them feel at home. Although my wife will still be making traditional American Thanksgiving dinner, we’d like to make some small gesture to make / buy a dish that is Indian.
Does anyone have suggestions; for either a relatively simple recipe, or for a dessert or candy that we could buy at a local Indian (or Asian food store)?
You guys are so sweet to think of making or buying something indian to make the guest feel at home.
You could buy a can of Haldiram’s Rasagullas or Ras Malai from the Indian store. Haldiram is a very famous indian brand and rasagulla is a very famous indian sweet. We always buy this when we have guests. If this is not available, you can check for more sweets in the frozen section of the indian store.
If you dont find the above stuff, then you can make a very simple fruit custard. Buy custard powder from the indian store (I like the vanilla flavor). Make custard according to its instructions (its very easy). Once you are done, add small cut pieces of fruit to it like bananas, applies, grapes, pears and refrigerate it for couple of hours. Serve it during or after dinner.
Hope this helps and Happy Thanksgiving to you guys !

Gajar Halwa is an excellent choice and would fit in well as a stand in for pumpkin pie. Please see the attached link. It’s very simple to make.

You should not buy any thing from an Indian Store. At home, you can make something that is similar to an Indian dish: Rice Pudding, or Pumpkin Pudding.
The Indian Rice Pudding is called Kheer, it is made in a pot on the stove top and flavored with cardamom seeds. You will be baking it and flavoring it with Vanilla.
Indian Pumpkin is similar to Butternut squash. Pumpkin pudding in India is called Kaddu Halwa. Kaddu Halwa is very rich with lots of Clarified Butter (Ghee) and raw sugar (Jaggerey). You should bake regular Pumpkin pudding.
Let your guest enjoy American dinner on American holiday, with a hint of something that will remind him of his family at home in India on this holiday season.

You can usually buy Indian candies at Indian groceries as well.
