10 Ways to Entertain the Children During the Summer Holidays

]]>
Now that summer is finally upon us, mum’s up and down the country will be seeking low cost and fun ways to entertain the kids.
Our top ten activities below include things to do indoors when the heavens open and a number of activities to do outdoors when the sun is shining.
Grow a Grass Head Monster. This is a slightly more sinister version than a normal grass head. You will need; a foot from some tights, some sawdust, grass seed, elastic band, yoghurt pot and lots stick on eyes and teeth.
Fill the toe of your tights with the grass seed. Next add the sawdust until you have reached the required size to fit nicely in your yoghurt pot. Fasten with the elastic band. Stand the head in the yoghurt pot with the grass at the top. Stick on as many eyes and teeth as you can fit in the space provided. Put water in the yoghurt pot and keep it topped up. You can of course decorate the yoghurt pot for his body. For a nice twist, grow a herb head instead of a grass head, at least you can use the herbs when cooking!
Musical Dress Up. This game can be hilarious. First you should visit a charity shop and buy lots of really garish or old fashioned clothes. The bigger the better. Put them in a pile in the middle of the room. Choose an item of clothing. Start the music. When the music stops the person holding the item of clothing has to put it on. This works especially well if you get hats, scarves, old ladies dresses etc. The winner is the person wearing the most amount of clothes. Take care when it is warm as they will be wearing a lot of clothes.
Make Some Salt Dough. Salt dough is so much more fun than play dough! You will need some basic ingredients and equipment that you probably have in your kitchen cupboards. You will need for the recipe; 2 cups of Plain Flour, 1 cup of table salt, 1 cup of water, 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil, 1 tablespoon of wallpaper paste (optional – gives it more elasticity) and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Mix all the ingredients together, adding the water slowly. You can make any number of projects using salt dough, but a particular favourite is Christmas tree decorations. Simply put a hole in your object and when it is dry, thread a ribbon through it. Salt dough models can take around 3-4 hours to dry in a really low oven (below gas mark 1) or around 4 days in the air. Once dried they can be painted and varnished to extend their life. If modelling with young children it might be best to leave out the wallpaper paste in case they eat any dough.
Play Chase the Balloon. This is more fun the more people are involved. You will need; 2 balloons per person, some string and lots of energy. Blow up lots of balloons. Tie some string round each balloon and then tie one to each ankle of each person. Each person then has to try to burst someone else’s balloon using their feet. This game is great for a giggle and wears them out. Make sure the kids are wearing non slip shoes.
Play What am I? This can be adapted for older or younger children so everybody can play. You will need some animal playing cards (or make your own) and some sellotape. You need at least 2 people. Each person chooses a card. Then choose an opponent and stick the card on their forehead (mind their hair) so everybody can see the card accept your opponent. Your opponent has to work out what animal they are by asking ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions such as, “Do I live in the jungle?”. This game can be used with other types of cards, you could do letters or numbers or colours. It can be educational as well as fun.
Go Pond Dipping. What child doesn’t enjoy messing around outdoors and getting their hands dirty? Make sure the children are dressed in old clothes and are wearing trainers in case the edge of the pond is slippery. You will need a fishing net (small), a container (white is best to see the insects etc clearly), a tea strainer (to sieve out their findings) and a magnifying glass to get a really good close up of the beasts! Ensure children wash their hands afterwards.
Go Crabbing. From an adult point of view this seems to be an utter waste of time, but kids love it. You will need; a bucket, some string (length depends on the depth of the water), a weight and some bait which could be uncooked bacon rind or raw meat. Fill your bucket with sea water. Simply attach the weight and the bait to the string and feed this into the water so it goes all the way to the bottom. Then wait, and wait. Kids love this activity as there is the anticipation of the catch, the danger of handling this vicious beast and then the study of the beast after capture. Be sure to keep the water in the bucket cool and return the crabs to their natural environment afterwards.
Go on an Adventure. Every now and then National Express Coaches offer coach trips for a £1 each way. You could pick a town from their list of destinations, find out what’s on offer in that town and take a day trip. The trip is far cheaper than if you had to pay for petrol. The coach trip will become part of the day out as it’s far more fun that going in the car. It’s also less hassle for mum and dad as no driving is involved.
Day Out at the Beach. There is no simpler pleasure than going to the beach with your brood. Pack a picnic, bucket, spade and sun cream and off you go. Generally you’ll find lots of other children down the beach and mum might even get a chance to relax.
Visit a Working Farm. Many working farms are now open to the public for a small fee. This can be so much fun. Pack a picnic and enjoy the great outdoors. Children can learn all about farming, feed the lambs, go on tractor rides and milk the cows.
The key to surviving the summer holidays is to be prepared whatever the weather. Make sure you chat with local mums and arrange play dates and gather ideas.
A child won’t remember that their house was spotless when they were younger but they will remember having fun with family and friends on days out.

There is no denying that history has bequeathed us many excellent examples of highly motivated individuals – and those individuals tended to have had a way with words, which is why some books and websites are able to fill their pages with motivational quotes, such as Henry Ford’s “A business that makes nothing but money is a poor business.” Many business leaders and business “gurus” have said how useful such quotes from the great and good have been to them, and of course, they should know.

How to Cope with the Summer Holidays

So, it’s the summer holidays. With approximately 48 hours before the first ‘Mum, I’m bored!’, it’s time to put on your holiday ideas hat. From day trips to fun in the garden, picnics to travel tips, check out this guide to a successful summer with the kids.
Activities at HomeGet creative! Kids love getting messy so stock up on inexpensive supplies such as glue, crayons, newspaper, paint and glitter and let them go wild! Design cards for birthdays or paint pictures to go on the fridge. Get out some old storage boxes and let them build and decorate them into cars, boats or even houses. Perhaps make one into a post office letterbox and let the kids write letters and spend hours posting everything they can lay their hands on.
Get baking! Choose a simple recipe for cakes or cookies and get them mixing and decorating their creations. Don’t forget to share with the rest of the family!
Outdoor ActivitiesThere are loads of things you can do as just a family or with a group of friends with kids of a similar age. Try a simple picnic in the park with a game of football or Frisbee.
Or, if you want to really give them a day to talk about when they get back to school, throw an Olympics day! 2012 is fast approaching so get the kids excited by adapting the games to suit you. Have running races, long jump and throwing competitions. You could even mix in the good old classic sports day races like egg and spoon or beanbag races. Simply go to your local park or a nearby field or common.
Divide the children into groups or teams and include children of all ages in the groups (each team should wear a different colour bib or t-shirt for easy identification). Organise events for all ages; the Olympic Games contain hundreds of different sports most of which can be adapted easily for children, so take your pick and let the games commence!
ExcursionsYou don’t need to take a trip to Disney World or enrol your child in expensive summer activities to help them get the most out of their summer holiday.
Take a walk or bicycle ride on a near-by National Trust walk. You could create a nature hunt in your local park or a nearby field by asking the kids to find different types of leaves or insects.
Just remember to keep them active and doing things which they wouldn’t normally do and they will never get bored!

What to be done with eggs right now- Safety and precautions
There are currently two egg recalls ongoing due to Salmonella enteritidis contamination. Salmonella poisoning is a foodborne bacterial illness that yearly affects thousands of consumers.
The second voluntary egg recall in the last several days has been issued as of August 19th and 20th by Hillandale Farms of New Hampton, Iowa. They are recalling 170 million eggs, shipped to 14 states including to Texas.
The Hillandale Farms recall is in addition to the recall begun earlier by Wright County Eggs, also of Iowa. That recall is of 380 million eggs. Some of the eggs may have been shipped to Texas by way of intermediate distributors.
The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has issued a news release regarding the recalls. It describes how to safely handle and cook eggs to avoid Salmonella food poisoning. Here are some of the recommendations:
“Eggs should be cooked until both the white and the yolk are firm and eaten promptly after cooking.
Keep eggs refrigerated at ≤ 45? F (≤7? C) at all times.
Discard cracked or dirty eggs.
Eat eggs promptly after cooking. Do not keep eggs warm or at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
Avoid restaurant dishes made with raw or undercooked, unpasteurized eggs. Restaurants should use pasteurized eggs in any recipe (such as Hollandaise sauce or Caesar salad dressing) that calls for raw eggs.
If you are not sure about a menu item, ask your server if includes raw or undercooked unpasteurized eggs.
Consumption of raw or undercooked eggs should be avoided, especially by young children, elderly persons, and person with weakened immune systems or debilitating illness. Pasteurized eggs should be used.
Other ways to avoid Salmonellosis from eggs include:
Prevent cross-contamination.
Keep raw eggs, meat, poultry, and seafood separate from other foods.
Use a different cutting board for meat, poultry, and seafood items, if possible.
Wash hands, cutting boards, dishes, utensils, and counter tops with hot, soapy water after contact with raw eggs, meat, poultry, or seafood.
Do not place cooked food on a plate that held raw meat, poultry, or seafood.”
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has also issued some guidelines to help avoid Salmonellosis. Their publication can be obtained from this website
Egg Safety
At the Store
Choice of Eggs
There are many choices for fresh or raw shell eggs available at stores today—brown or white, cage, cage-free, organic, free range, or specialty eggs like omega 3. No matter what kind you decide to buy, making sure you choose a safe carton of eggs is extremely important. Always purchase eggs from a refrigerated case. Open the carton and make sure there are no visible cracks or leaking eggs. Cracks and leakage can lead to contamination of the egg and could potentially cause illness. Don’t buy out-of-date eggs and look for the USDA grade shield or mark.
Labeling and Dating of Cartons
Always purchase eggs before the sell-by or expiration date on the carton.
Egg Products
The term “egg products” refers to processed or ready-to-use forms of eggs obtained by breaking and processing shell eggs. Although egg products have been processed, it is important to follow all cooking instructions on the packaging to ensure maximum safety.
In the Kitchen
Storage
Refrigeration — After the shell eggs reach home, it is very important to refrigerate them at a temperature of 45 °F or below. Keep the eggs in their carton and place them in the coldest part of the refrigerator, not in the door. Storing eggs in the refrigerator door could lead to temperature fluctuations that can lead to bacteria growth. Eggs may be refrigerated 3 to 5 weeks from the day they are placed in the refrigerator. The sell-by date will usually expire during that length of time, but the eggs are perfectly safe to use. Liquid egg products should be kept refrigerated at all times and consumed within two to six days from the date of purchase. Once liquid egg products are opened, they should be used immediately.
Freezing — Fresh shell eggs can be frozen, however, NOT IN THE SHELL. For whole eggs, yolks and egg whites, remove egg from shell and place in tightly sealed container. Label with the date. Refrigerated liquid eggs can be placed unopened in the freezer. Both fresh shell eggs and refrigerated egg products can be stored in the freezer up to a year.
Handling
To prevent the spread of bacteria, it is important to start with a clean area and clean utensils. It is to wash hands, utensils, equipment and work surfaces thoroughly in hot, soapy water for at least 20 seconds before and after you come into contact with any food. To guard against bacteria surviving in pores, plastic or other non-porous cutting boards may be used. Only clean eggs with unbroken shells should be used. Discarding any eggs that have become unclean, cracked, broken or leaking should be taken into careful attention. Eggshells are washed and sanitized before packing and incorrect home procedures might infect the contents.
Cooking
It is important to cook eggs thoroughly to destroy bacteria. While light cooking will begin to destroy any bacteria that might be present only proper cooking brings eggs to a high enough temperature to destroy them all. For eggs, the white will coagulate (set) between 144 and 149° F, the yolk between 149 and 158° F, and whole egg between 144 and 158° F.Egg products made of plain whole eggs are pasteurized, or heated to destroy bacteria. The pasteurization process consists of bringing the eggs to 140°F and keeping them at that temperature for three and a half minutes. While this temperature destroys bacteria, it does not thoroughly cook the product. For scrambled eggs, omelets and frittatas, eggs should be cooked until no visible liquid remains. Fried eggs should be cooked until the whites are completely set and the yolk is thickened but not hard. For classic poached eggs, eggs should be cooked gently in simmering water until the white are completely set and the yolk begins to thicken but are not hard. Precooking and reheating poached eggs should be avoided. Hard cooked eggs should reach an internal temperature of more than 160°F. After cooking, hard-cooked eggs should be cooled under water or in ice water. Other foods that contain eggs, like French toast, quiches, baked goods and casseroles, it is advisable to make sure that the dishes are properly done and prevent uneven cooking by using a thermometer in the center and around the sides of the of the dish. The thermometer should reach 160°F. For custards, eggnog and ice cream bases, eggs should be cooked until the mixture reaches a temperature of 160°F or higher. After cooking, it is necessary to cool it quickly by setting the pan in ice or cold water and stirring for a few minutes. The more egg whites, the lower the temperature and longer the time we need to cook the meringue through without excessive browning.
At a party or picnic
While proper cooking destroys any bacteria that may have been present in an egg, an egg dish may be cross-contaminated after cooking by people, other foods, cooking utensils or equipment. During a party or a picnic, this is very easily done. If a dish is contaminated, bacteria will multiply rapidly at temperatures between 40 and 140°F. Promptly serve eggs and dishes containing eggs after cooking.
At a special occasion
The holidays are a perfect time to eat eggs and egg products. During Easter, it is very popular to color fresh shell eggs. Before any type of interaction with eggs, it is important to first wash your hands and your working area thoroughly. It is important to refrigerate hard-cooked eggs in their cartons if you won’t be coloring them right after cooking and cooling. Only uncracked eggs should be colored. . If any eggs crack during dyeing or while on display, we should discard them along with any eggs that have been out of refrigeration for more than two hours.

Hillandale Farms of Iowa Conducts Nationwide Voluntary Recall of Shell Eggs
Because of Possible Health Risk
August 20, 2010 – Hillandale Farms of Iowa is voluntarily recalling shell eggs because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis, or arthritis.
Eggs affected by this recall were distributed to grocery distribution centers, retail grocery stores and foodservice companies which service or are located in fourteen states, including the following: Arkansas, California, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Texas, and Wisconsin.
There have been laboratory-confirmed Salmonella enteritidis illnesses associated with the shell eggs; the investigation is ongoing.
Eggs are distributed under the following brand names: Hillandale Farms, Sunny Farms, and Sunny Meadow in 6-egg cartons, dozen-egg cartons, 18-egg cartons, 30-egg package, and 5-dozen cases. Loose eggs are packaged under the following brand names: Wholesome Farms and West Creek in 15 and 30-dozen tray packs. The loose eggs may also be repackaged by customers.
The only eggs effected by this recall have plant numbers P1860 or P1663 and Julian dates as follows:
P1860 – Julian dates ranging from 099 to 230
P1663 – Julian dates ranging from 137 to 230
Only eggs with these plant numbers are affected – even though the brand name may be the same.
Julian dates and plant codes can be found stamped on the end of the egg carton or printed on the case label. The plant number begins with the letter P and then the number. The Julian date follows the plant number, for example: P1860 230.
Consumers who believe they may have purchased these shell eggs should not eat them but should return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. Consumers with questions should contact Hillandale Farms at (866) 262-4208.
Hillandale Farms strives to provide our customers with safe, high-quality eggs – that is our responsibility and our commitment and why we are fully cooperating with FDA’s investigation and are undertaking this voluntary recall. Additionally, as a precautionary measure, we are also diverting our existing inventory of shell eggs.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis or arthritis.
Eggs affected by this recall were distributed to food wholesalers and retailers in California and Nevada. NuCal Foods received these eggs from Hillandale Farms of Iowa which were then packaged into 5-dozen and 2.5-dozen overwrapped retail units. In addition to those products listed in the original Hillandale Farms of Iowa media statement dated August 20, 2010 .

Been thinking that maybe it’s time to spread your writing wings a bit and pen something new? More specifically, you may be thinking about writing an article or several articles about a topic that is totally outside your usual subject area.
If you are, then Congratulations! This is a phase of the natural evolutionary process that writers experience … it simply means that you’re moving forward in your work. Writing articles about different subjects is an effective way of gaining even more exposure for yourself and your business.
Besides, marketing with articles doesn’t limit you to being an authority on only one topic. All you need to do choose a new subject area in which to focus your writing.
Sure, you can always hit the Search Engines and reap the return of hot keywords up for grabs … or, you can pick a topic off the top of your head … maybe something you heard on the news… some new-age subject or relatively obscure concept about which you can write, provided you can research it well enough to do a credible article.
Or, you can stick with what you know.
Huh? But you’re chomping at the bit to expand your writing into different areas. How is writing more about what you know going to offer a new challenge or more exposure for you?
As writers, we sometimes develop tunnel vision. In other words, we can’t see the actual forest for the proverbial trees. Writing what you know isn’t necessarily writing about the same subject.
That is, unless you only know that one topic about which you’ve been writing articles.
Lucky for you… you’re a walking encyclopedia!
Sure you are, take a stroll through your own variegated alphabet of personal interests, those beyond your professional and/or career knowledge. You’ll be surprised to realize that there are several subjects for which you already have the knowledge and expertise to produce incredible articles.
A airplanes – antiques – aquariums – art – autos
B ballet – baseball – birds – boating – building
C camping – cats – coins – cooking – crafts

It’s okay if you don’t see one of your particular interests or hobbies in the above list. In fact, that’s even better.
Now, this is where you get to carve out your niche for writing articles. The hobbies and interests listed aren’t meant to limit you, they’re meant to inspire you!
Airplanes for A may not have struck a cord with you, but now auto’s that’s a different story. You’ve been into classic cars for as long as you can remember. There’s your niche!
If the b in ballet stands for boring as far as you’re concerned, consider what it means to you in building. Yes, you, the one who’s always sporting a carpenter’s apron and hammer every Saturday. Another niche nailed down!
Moving right along to the letter C, scratch the cats-coins-and-crafts and that’s your category. Camping is one of your passions. And when it comes to cooking you grill a mean steak, if you do say so yourself. But wait… that comes under G for grilling. How about combining it with outdoors from O and recipes from R? Looks like you’ve cooked up your own niche article ideas in Outdoors + Grilling + Recipes = Savory Campsite Cuisine. You could do an entire series of articles on that topic!
As a writer, it’s essential to remain genuine in order to be effective. Writing about what you know and on subjects about which you are truly passionate is one of the best ways to distinguish yourself. It’s the feeling that comes through naturally as you write about certain topics, which is apparent to the reader and reflects you as an authority.
While research is indeed a part of writing, it does have its place. Hours invested in research will never replace what is written from within. If a subject is not in your heart, it will never be in your head … and certainly not in your writing.
Call it old-school or back-to-basics, but being genuine is what separates real writers from those who are merely content generators. Unplug for a while to rediscover your own true interests and passions, but keep a pen and paper handy. A breath of creative fresh air breeds countless intriguing ideas… you can rely on your collective notes and inspirations when you return to your keyboard. Rest assured … they will serve your writing well!

A great feature of the Apple iPhone is that you can extend the functionality by installing extra applications to meet your personal requirements. If you are a business user then there are plenty of useful productivity applications that can really help you to organize your life. If you are a more general user then you might want applications to give you extra information about what matters to you. One great application you might want to check out is WeatherBug.
When you have installed WeatherBug on your iPhone you will have instant access to up to the minute weather reports which make planning your days out so much easier. Who wants to go on a picnic when rain is on the way? No longer will you need to wait until the weather forecast comes on the news since the information you need is right there on your iPhone.
Another application well worth checking out is the Food Network application. With this application you will be able to find some of the best recipes that have featured on Food Network shows. You get fully detailed instructions as well as videos to in excess of over 30,000 recipes. If you want to try something new you can browse through the index based on ingredients and you’ll be sure to find something that appeals to you. If you’re a keen cook or just like discovering new recipes then this application is for you.
If you’re a music lover and enjoy going to watch musicians perform then you might want to check out MyMusicServed. What this application will do is let you find out about upcoming concerts. You even get detailed driving instructions to the venues so you can easily find your way there. You can also use it to keep tabs on your favorite bands by finding out where they are playing next. It also has a feature where you can share the information you have found by emailing information about a concert to anybody in your address book with a simple tap.
How easy is that? You can share vital information about upcoming concerts with people you think might be interested in going with you and you won’t get lost trying to find a new venue.
The driving directions really are something else. Not only are they extremely detailed but you also get up to the minute traffic information. Let’s face it. If you’re on your way to watch one of your favorite bands the last thing you want to be doing is sitting in traffic while you’re trying to get there. If you spend a lot of time going to watch live music then you will simply love this application.

Weed vaporizers work by heating up your herbs to the appropriate temperature so that the chemicals inside the plant boil away to a vapor which can be breathed in. This is significantly healthier compared with smoking or injesting the herb as it provides a much larger amount of control over dosage and there are a lot fewer side effects.

How many times have you read about marketers being able to send out an email and immediately make thousands of dollars just for hitting send?
If you aren’t aware of the secrets behind how they can do this then you could be forgiven for assuming that they are employing some sort of magic, or even lying about how much they actually make. In fact, neither of these are the case. As soon as you start to create leverage into your business you will soon see just how easy it really is.

You and Your Clients Will Love Catering Software

Chances are you’ve noticed a trend in the catering world that began with the birth of catering software. The trend is this: better overall organization and higher customer satisfaction ratings. Many professionals across the country, and even the world, are using these organizational programs to make their businesses more productive and efficient on every level. The great changes can be seen especially in company finances, inventory control, and client gratification.
With catering software, you and your employees will be more likely to create seamless events that dazzle the eyes and the taste buds of your clients and their guests. You will have more time and energy to devote to your events because of the ease of use these specialized programs offer. With event reminders, automated shopping lists, and inventory updates included, the program will allow you take your mind off the more tedious aspects of your events, so you can focus on your dishes and the all-important presentation.
Catering software is great for your clients because it can actually help them manage an understandably tight budget. The price of the event is updated with every addition to the dishes and presentation, so you can give your customer an accurate estimate at any time of how much their event is going to cost. For example, if your customer decides to make the location of their event an outdoor affair, you can let easily them know how much it will cost to add lawn chairs, picnic tables, outdoor lighting, and insect repellent lamps to the party.
Although catering software is an investment that could potentially increase your customers’ satisfaction, it will also work great for your everyday, behind-the-scenes tasks as well. For most caterer’s, inventory is one of the most difficult aspects of the food business that is difficult to keep up. With different dishes being prepared all the time and different events going at once, it can, in fact, seem impossible to control. Yet even inventory control can become easier with these innovative programs. This software can update your inventory automatically. This means that when you use six of your ten cartons of vegetable stock, your inventory will show that you have four left over for a future recipe. No more physical counts and guesstimates: you can know exactly what you have, any time.
Catering software is also great for help with the less exciting aspects of catering, including sales reports. It’s important for a successful business to keep a constant watch over how much money it spends in relation to how much money it collects from customers. The food business is no exception, and that job just got easier with these inventive, new programs. They’ll also help your busy business stay organized by keeping track of all your outstanding customer invoices, along with records of those who have paid. Since this software can keep track of your customers’ payments, it’s no surprise that it can also keep track of all your customers’ favorite recipes, so it’s easy to pull up the recipes of your most treasured dishes whenever necessary.
